NVDA: Basic page navigation

Start reading text by pressing NVDA key + down arrow, or if that doesn’t work try NVDA key + a. This reads the whole page in one go.

If you’d like to pause your listening, press shift, then press shift to resume listening. Try pausing and then starting again.

If you would like to stop the speech, you can press control, but to start listening again you will have to use NVDA key + down arrow/a.

If you press ctrl + down arrow it will read the next paragraph and then stop reading. How many times is the word small used in the next paragraph? Press ctrl + down arrow now to move to the next paragraph.

There was a small river that flowed into a small stream which flowed into a small pond. The small pond was full of small fish and tiny tadpoles that Katie the kookaburra eyed off with her small beady eyes. The tiny tadpoles swam in small circles, leaving small ripples in their wake.

Did you count them all? You can always go back and listen to a paragraph again using ctrl + up arrow. Press ctrl + down arrow to hear the next paragraph which has the answer.

If you press the down arrow by itself it will only read the next line of text, so it might stop in the middle of a sentence. There are two lines in the next paragraph. Try pressing the down arrow to listen to the next few lines after this paragraph. Remember the last word you hear on the first line.

Once upon a time there was a kookaburra who lived in a tall tree. The kookaburra was called Katie and she loved to fly from her tree to the river and catch worms.
