Challenge Camp 2001 - Report from a Challenge Camper!
The following report was prepared by Jaimee, one of our Challenge Campers:

On Tuesday the 22nd of May I went to a VT Challenge Camp at Delhuntie Park at Trafalgar East in Gippsland. I woke up at 5:30 a.m. in the morning and got ready to go to camp. We put our luggage into the back of our car and then we went to go pick up Jeni, our Visiting Teacher (VT), from her place in Carrum.  We then went to the Mordialloc train station where we had to meet up with a couple of students that were going on the camp with us.

We got onto the train with our luggage and we went to Spencer Street Station. When we got there we met up with more students and two more VT's.  There were 6 girls and 8 boys going to the Camp. The students were all different ages. When everyone arrived we then had to go to Platform No. 13 and all of our luggage had to go on a trolley and was taken over to the platform for us.

We had to go on a Country train to Moe and it was a one-carriage train.  It was good on the country train.  We were allowed to go and see the driver of the train and he was showing us all the different buttons and what they were for.  Every minute when a white light flashed, he had to press the red button down.  If he didn't press the red button then the person in charge at the control room would think that something was wrong and would then send out ambulance and police and the emergency brakes would come on.  This was to make sure that everything was okay and that the driver was paying attention and not having a snooze or something.

We got off the train at Moe where we met another VT who was waiting for us in her car.  Then she took us to Delhuntie Park.   When we got there we had a tour of the Park and then the VT's worked out what cabins we were going to sleep in.  The 6 girls and 2 VT's shared a cabin. There were 12 bunks in our cabin. The 8 boys and 2 VT's shared a cabin with nine bunks. In each of the cabins there was a double bed in a separate room and there was a kitchen. We had lunch after we all got settled in.

We all then went for a look around the Delhuntie Park Camp and check out what was around.  We then lit the BBQ so we could have dinner and that was real yummy.   After dinner we played some games and my sister Kylie and I did our homework. Then it was time to get ready for bed.

On Wednesday morning we got up at 7:00 a.m. and had a shower and got dressed and ready for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. in the recreation room (rec room). We had to wait until 9:30 a.m. for the instructors to come and their names were Theo and Seamus and they told us what to do and what activity we would be doing first.  The first activity was the mud pit. You had to walk along a wooden pole and there was mud all around you.
Jeni (Visiting Teacher) hangs upside down, with her tummy showing, on the Bungee.
Then we did the Snowy River Challenge where we had to climb around a wall then across swinging tyres and then we went over a wall. It was fun. After that we went to go get a harness and put it on and went to the Bungy activity. We got hooked onto 2 ropes that were attached to a very thick piece of elastic and we got pulled down and we went flying in the air. After the Bungy we had lunch in the rec room.

After lunch we got a harness on and went to the Zip Wire over the lake. We had to climb a tree to get to the platform.  We got hooked onto a rope that was connected to the wire and then we stepped off of the platform. It was very fun. The next activity was the abseiling wall. We had to wear a harness then we climbed up a wall and then we abseiled off it.

After abseiling we went and had dinner in the rec room.  After dinner we used Deb's (one of the VT's) stilts and they were the ones that the circus use.  Deb is a performer in the Women's Circus. The stilts were great fun. After the girls played on the stilts we went into our cabin and got into our Pj's and went into the kitchen and toasted marshmallows in the fire then we went to bed.

On Thursday morning we got ready for breakfast and went to the rec room. Then we had to wait for Seamus and Theo to come. When they came it was raining outside so we did two of the activities inside. The first one was a wooden post that had little legs and you had to get two people to stand on each end of the post and they had to get to the other side of the post without touching the ground. Theo chose a person to do it. He chose Sam and then Sam had to choose a partner to do it with so he chose Kyle. Sam and Kyle couldn't do it. Then Theo and Seamus had a turn because they knew how to do it but they fell onto the ground. They chose one more person to do it and they chose Libby and so Libby chose me to do it with.  Libby and I made it across without touching the ground at all.
Jaimee stops at the end of the flying fox. Jeni and Deb pull her towards the dismount area by her legs.
We then went outside and went to an activity where we had to get up on to a swinging ladder and we had to climb it and touch the tree.  It was hard. Then we went to the high wire activity. We had to be hooked onto a rope and then we had to climb a tree to get to the wire. You couldn't hold onto anything but the rope that was hooked onto you and a wire over the top of your head and you couldn't reach it. That was really fun.

The next activity was the Wild Wally. There were 2 wires about 1 metre off the ground and you had to have a partner to work with. The wires spread out very far apart. You had to push your hands together. Libby and I made it the furthest. After that we went to the rec room and had lunch.

After lunch we went to the Rip and Seamus and Theo had the harnesses. The rip is a giant swing. You had to wear a harness then you were hooked onto a rope and the other people had to pull the rope down a hill and they would stop when you said stop. When you said, "stop", they take another two steps forward.  After they have stopped, they would yell out "1,2,3 RIP" and you would have to pull the lever down and you would go swinging. That was a great activity.

Then we went to an activity called Death Before Glory. You had to be wearing a harness and you were hooked onto a rope and you had to climb a tree and go onto a plank of wood.  Then you had to walk out and jump and try to hold onto a monkey bar. Only two of the VT's got it so they had to put their legs on top of the bar and hang upside down. Then we said good-bye and thankyou for helping us.

We then went and had dinner in the rec room.  After dinner we went and got the stilts and we were playing on them and Deb was holding us up. When it was my turn on the stilts I started to walk by myself. Then we went back to our cabins and got ready for bed and then we cooked marshmallows in the fire and went to bed.
One of the evening activities was clay-making - Jaimee making her creation.
Today is Friday and it is our last day, I wish we had longer.  We had breakfast in the girls cabin and then we packed our bags and put them outside. The VT's took us to McDonalds for lunch. Then we walked to Moe train station and we waited for the country train and we travelled into Spencer Street Station.

Some of the kids went home from there and Kyle, Lee (VT), Kylie, Jeni (VT) and I went by train to Mordialloc and got off there and Kyle's Dad was there and he took Lee (VT) home and Kyle home. My Mum wasn't at the train station so we had to get back on another train to get to Carrum and that's where Mum picked us up.  Mum took Jeni (VT) home and then we went home and unpacked our bags.

When we first starting doing the activities, I didn't think I could do all of them because they were too high and scary, but I ended up doing all of them and they were fun. The camp was really great fun and I met some really great people.  The VT's were great and made it a really good camp and I would like to go next year.
Smiling girls after a full day of activities - Tracey, Christina, Jaimee, Libby and Kylie.
