Braille Window Project

The Braille Window Project will begin in Melbourne with a Writing Workshop on Saturday 1st March and Sunday 2nd March. Writers who are blind or vision impaired are invited to join one of the four workshops scheduled for this first weekend in March.

Workshops
Organised by Anne Walton and Bruce Maguire this project will involve guided walks through Melbourne city streets and lanes for an hour, with a coffee shop stop, to gather impressions for a writing session straight afterwards. Nadia Wheatley and other writers will facilitate the writing workshops and be involved in the Braille Window Project.

Where: State Library of Victoria (To Be Confirmed)

When: Saturday 1st March or Sunday 2nd March. Sunday afternoon has been set aside for students.
Workshops are of three and a half hours duration with a one hour lunch break: e.g.
9.45 AM to 12.30 PM or 1.30 PM to 4.15 PM. Lunch will be between 12.30-1.30 PM so that people from both workshops will be able to mingle.

This project is being organised by Anne Walton (Sydney-based video performance artist) and Bruce Maguire (braille advocate and publisher). It started in Sydney in January 2007, and is coming to Melbourne in March 2008. The braille writings from these workshops will form the content for the Braille Window Project. The picture below shows fingers touching braille on the gallery window. The photo has been taken from inside the gallery. The writing has been brailled on transparent braille label which has then been attached to the window of the gallery. Because the braille and the window are transparent the pads of the fingers can be seen touching the braille..
