Inside This Issue
Everyone seems well rested after the summer break. It has been a rather cool start to the new year – I hope the weatherman doesn’t have too many days of 40º temperatures planned for us before the leaves begin to change! We look forward to seeing you or hearing from you soon!

Parking at the SVRC
Please note that visitors are not permitted to park in the driveway outside the SVRC. Heatherwood School requires clear access for delivery vehicles and ambulance at all times. If you arrive to find the SVRC car park full, please drive round to the Donvale Sports Complex next door. It is only a short walk to the SVRC. Thank you.
SVRC Website
Remember to look at our website which can be found at www.svrc.vic.edu.au/. There is a lot of interesting and informative material there including back issues of The Bulletin.

SOUTH PACIFIC EDUCATORS IN VISION IMPAIRMENT (SPEVI)
Victorian Branch - Plans for 2000
Welcome to 2000! This is a message from the Councillors and ‘Friends of SPEVI’. We met late last year and decided to try to give meetings a new look to provide the opportunity for greater social as well as professional communication when we come together.
We plan to have termly get-togethers at various venues hosted by different Agencies as well as the Combined Agencies Day which will be at St Paul’s on Monday 2 October. Meetings will be on Mondays and will be held in March, May, August and November.
The first meeting will be on Monday March 6 hosted by the DoE at the Statewide Vision Resource Centre in Donvale It will start with drinks at 5.30pm then at 6pm we hope Alan Johnson, Optometrist will talk with us for about an hour with opportunities for questions and discussion. Following this we will have dinner either at the DoE or at a restaurant with opportunities for further informal ‘shop’ talk as well as gathering socially. There will be a charge for dinner. We hope that all the meetings will include dinner afterwards.
2001 will be the SPEVI Conference in Auckland so let’s hope you are all saving for the trip. The final call for papers is the end of February (not long!) and we hope there will be many offered from Victoria. To keep up to date with plans for the Conference consult the Net on rnzfb.org.nz.
We plan to keep you informed about our local meetings as soon as plans are complete. We do hope to see you at the SPEVI meetings and please bring your friends with you.
If you have any queries please contact your local SPEVI Councillors:

RENWICK COLLEGE
University of Newcastle
Post Graduate Studies in Vision Impairment
(Distance Education)
Two University of Newcastle postgraduate awards specialising in Vision Impairment, the Master of Special Education (Sensory Disability), and the Graduate Certificate of Educational Studies (Special Education), may now be completed through a combination of off-campus packages and residential schools in addition to their being offered in the regular, on-campus mode at Renwick College. The reverse side of this sheet outlines a typical program of study. Individual units in the program may also be undertaken for credit towards a degree at another university through cross-institutional enrolment.
Units offered off-campus comprise a package including student handbook, course outlines and guides, readings, library and online reference guides and a schedule of bulletin board activities. Access to a computer and the internet are essential for off-campus units. Other units will require attendance at Renwick College at least once during the semester for week or weekend residential schools. Maximum opportunity will be provided during these on-campus sessions for access to support from the College library and specialist staff of the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children. Student accommodation at budget rates is available on campus for week and weekend residential schools.
The Graduate Certificate requires completion of four 500 level units, while the Masters degree requires completion of an additional four 500 level units for a total of eight units
The following units will be offered in distance mode in the 2000-2001 academic years. Units with codes underlined must be completed for accreditation with the NSW Department of Education and Training as a teacher of students with a vision impairment.
